The Columbus Wizards Return to the Polar Plunge for a Chill of a Lifetime

There are moments in sports that go far beyond the game. Moments that remind us why community matters… why connection matters… why people matter. For the Columbus Wizards, one of those moments happened last winter when President Casey Gillespie stepped to the edge of an icy pool, took a breath, and did something he never imagined himself doing he jumped into freezing water for Special Olympics Ohio.

And he didn’t jump alone.

Casey made his first-ever Polar Plunge alongside our friends from the Pickerington Jaguars, creating a memory that became bigger than basketball and more meaningful than any scoreboard could ever show. As Casey often says: “The community isn’t just part of what we do — it is the foundation of who we are.” That day was proof.

Why the Polar Plunge Matters to Us

For many, the Polar Plunge is a fun challenge. For the Wizards, it is something deeper. Special Olympics Ohio represents the heart of our mission: building joy, inclusion, opportunity, and connection for athletes with intellectual disabilities across our state. It’s a cause that resonates deeply with Casey and his family and a cause that perfectly aligns with the values the Wizards stand on.

The plunge is cold, yes. But it’s also powerful. It’s a moment where the community comes together not just to cheer — but to show up for those who inspire us daily.

Jumping Back In for 2026 — With a Twist

This year, the Columbus Wizards are returning to the Polar Plunge with even more excitement, energy, and purpose. President Casey Gillespie is back in the water and this time, he’s bringing reinforcements. Our VP of Partnerships, Maxwell Witty, will be taking his very first plunge, and considering Max is from Florida, this might be the coldest moment of his entire life.

Event Details

Date: Saturday, February 7, 2026

Location: Fortress Obetz

2015 Recreation Trail Obetz, OH 43207

The Challenge Begins

If the Wizards raise $5,000, Casey and Max will jump in a fan-selected costume. Superheroes, mascots, or something unforgettable; the fans will decide, and the Wizards will deliver. The 2026 plunge is shaping up to be both the coldest and most entertaining one yet.

How You Can Be Part of the Movement

Supporters can get involved in several ways, and joining the Wizards’ official Polar Plunge team is easier than ever. To join us, simply click HERE.

Once there, you’ll see three options:

1. Become a General Plunger — Jump with the Wizards Sign up to take the icy leap alongside Casey, Max, and the Wizards community. Registered plungers receive their own fundraising page to support Special Olympics Ohio.

2. Too Chicken to Plunge — Support Without Jumping If the water isn’t for you, you can still join the team and fundraise on our behalf, all while staying warm and dry.

3. Donate Directly — Make an Immediate Impact If you prefer not to register, you can donate directly to help the Wizards reach their $5,000 goal. Every contribution counts and supports the mission.

Every option matters. Every supporter becomes part of the story.

A Tradition Worth Freezing For

For the Wizards, the Polar Plunge is more than a fundraising event. It’s a tradition that reflects who we are; a team committed to community, service, and supporting athletes who inspire us every day. Whether you plunge, donate, cheer, or share the mission, you're helping create something meaningful.

Together, we’re making this year’s Polar Plunge a Chill of a Lifetime.
